Alpha and Omega - Part 5

By Marie Ellen Pacha

"Help her up Adam," God directed.

And Adam lifted Eve to a standing position. He held on as she wobbled, and straightened her back gaining balance as she adapted to the new position. To an observing eye it would have seemed as though she had never stood before, or moved at all, but at the same time her musculature appeared to be fully developed and not flabby from lack of use.

"It's time for your meal, Adam. And time we introduced Eve to nourishment. And also time she begins to learn our routine," God spoke again.

Eve listened, looking around the area. The black of the floors was mirrored in the walls. Her mind gave names to some of the objects she was seeing. She acquiesced as Adam took her arm and led her halting steps to an area of the wall which opened as they neared it.

Against the wall of the next room were a table and two chairs. Adam led her to one chair and then demonstrated how they were used. She mimicked his action, and sat facing him.

"You must teach her the words for everything Adam. Her brain has heard them all before, but she must learn to associate those words with the objects."

"Yes God," Adam nodded in understanding.

He pointed to the chairs and spoke out loud, "Chair."

Eve's pronunciation did not quite replicate his as she repeated the word. And Adam followed the same procedure with the word table.

As her voice ended on the second syllable Adam pressed some buttons on a console on the wall. Immediately a portion of the table slid open and containers appeared. Adam reached forward and opened each of them. He took a cube from each and placed them on his side of the table. Eve once again mimicked his actions.

She watched him closely as he moved a cube to his mouth and took a bite, and she did the same. Her eyes widened as the flavor spread across her tongue.

"Food," Adam spoke.

"Fud," she answered, and then, "Food," correcting her pronunciation.

"Good," God spoke again, "She's learning."

Eve wasn't quite sure what the voice meant by that but she could tell by the tone that he approved. Her lips instinctively formed a smile, which Adam returned.

Following dinner Adam showed her to a bathing area, where all their bodily functions would be taken care of. He showed her again, by example, as much as he could (considering the different shape of their bodies) what all the pieces of equipment were for. They showered and used the toilet facilities and neither of them exhibited any shame or modesty at performing those functions in front of the other.

Adam continued to follow the routine familiar to him, watching a video on a screen on a wall. On this particular night Eve watched along with him, not understanding every thing she saw, but making an attempt to make sense of the world she found herself in.

As the program ended Adam got up from the chair he was in and indicated Eve should follow him. She did as instructed, and they moved to a room which held a single large bed. Adam lay down on one side, and Eve followed suit on the other.

"Goodnight Adam. Goodnight Eve." God's voice spoke softly.

"Goodnight god," Adam answered first, and then Eve spoke, mimicking his words, "Goodnight god."

The lights faded until it was dark, and Eve sensed rather than saw Adam turn on his side and curl into a fetal position. Soon he was asleep, and shortly after so was she.
