Alpha and Omega - Part 2
By Marie Ellen Pacha
It was dark when she came to consciousness, and it was a slow process. She was lying on something hard and it felt cool against her flesh. It did not seem unnatural or natural...it just was.
Minutes passed and she laid there as if absorbing the dark, and then she slowly moved and sat up. Her hand moved against the surface of the floor, and found no irregularities in its surface. And then it moved across her body as if it were exploring.
She was startled when the voice first spoke. "Welcome," it said. She looked around as if to find its source, but it had seemed to come from all around her.
"You may call me god," it spoke again. "Your name is Eve."
Some muscle memory seemed to ignite, and a sound...guttural and rusty tried to emerge from her lips. "Ggggd?"
"Not bad for a first try," the voice commented almost in observation. "Don't you agree Adam?"
A second voice spoke, and this time she could identify the direction it was coming from. She turned towards it as it answered, "Not bad at all."
"Would you like to see what Eve looks like?" the first voice, god's queried.
"Yes I would like that very much," was the second voice's response.
And god spoke, "Let there be light!"
And there was light.
Once again she was startled as the dark relinquished its hold on the room. It seemed to be a new sensation and for a moment she was blinded although the light was dim as it first came on. Her eyes closed reflexively and it was a moment before she tried to open them again. Slowly she lifted her lids and looked around.
She didn't know the words for this place and what she saw and that seemed strange because she seemed to understand what god had said. She looked around quickly and at herself as well trying to make some sense of who or what she was...and where she was. There was only one other object she could see, and it moved as the light grew brighter.
It was shaped much like she was, but not exactly. Some parts seemed to be missing, and it had some she did not.
"Eve this is Adam. He is your companion," god's voice spoke again.
"Adam meet Eve," he continued the introduction.
Eve's mind worked even as she absorbed the words. This thing coming towards her must be Adam she thought. I wonder what an Adam is? And what is god? WHERE is god?
She shivered, confused by too much stimuli. This would become a pattern for her; confusion when faced with things she did not understand and then ignoring the things that didn't interest her or she couldn't understand.
"Is there something wrong with her," Adam asked. He had never seen anyone shiver before.
"No, she is trying to understand all that you have already learned. Trying to put things in their place."
