Alpha and Omega - Part 14

By Marie Ellen Pacha

We do not lack for intelligence. Among the resources available to us it is perhaps the most abundant. What we do lack are the raw materials necessary to bring our conceptualized projects to completion. We have machines capable of incredibly detailed workmanship, but we do not have the heavy industry capabilities available to society during the Industrial Age. No blast furnaces, molds or mass production of items that were relied upon in the 20th century.

Exposure to radiation is still a very real danger in some areas of the planet. Not only did nuclear weapons release radiation; some of them struck nuclear reactors, and other reactors developed maintenance problems once there was no staff to maintain them and the inevitable meltdowns occurred. Seismic activity around the world has intensified. Our scientists believe one of those meltdowns actually penetrated to the molten core. The planet was further assaulted.

Climatic changes created a mini ice age, and have left regions once accessible buried under expanses of snow. We still have access to some of the satellites circling the planet, and they bear witness to the geographical and meteorological changes. Aside from the logistical problems of accessing raw materials, we can't risk any of our population in attempts to retrieve them. The more aggressive of our scientists insist that eventually we will have to become mechanized again in order to maintain our survival as a species; even if this means sacrificing equipment we currently use to perfect and build machinery that will allow us to explore and conquer the wastelands where resources are available.

But for now, the consensus of the population is to maintain our status quo and guarantee our continued existence at the present level.
